-Create a mountable volume from a Replay in the Dell Compellent web interface
-Mount the volume to an existing Microsoft SQL 2008 Cluster
-Prepare the new volume for SQL access using FCM (Failover Cluster Management)
A Dell Compellent Replay is a snapshot of an active volume. The Replays can be scheduled or created manually. Once the Replay is available, it can be converted to a mountable volume and mapped to physical or virtual server cluster.
Once the volume is mapped the disk needs to be put into the online state via the Cluster Master. Using FCM the disk will be added to the cluster, storage will be assigned to the cluster using the new disk and dependencies will be added to the services needing access to the data on the new disk and storage.
I. Create a mountable volume from a Replay Disk
1. Login to the Dell Compellent web interface
2. In System Explorer- Expand Volumes
3. Navigate to the folder that contains the volume(s)
4. Expand the folder. Click the volume.
5. Click the Replays tab in the main viewing pane.
6. Right click any Replay available and choose Create Volume from Replay
6a. IF AN INSTANT REPLAY IS NEEDED: Right click the volume inside the folder view in the left pane. Choose Replay–>Create Replay. Once it is created, follow step 6.
7. Name the volume and select the folder. Depending on your type of volume and server folder organization, the new volume may need to be placed in a different folder.
8. Click the Create Now button the bottom right.
9. Mapping the volume is the next task. The Compellent will give you the opportunity to create a server or continue. In my case the servers are already created (as are the clusters of servers) so I’ll hit the continue button.
10. Choose the cluster to map the volume to and finish with the wizard
11. The volume will appear online (according to the Compellent) if the volume icon turns blue.
II. Add the Volume to a Microsoft 2008 SQL Cluster
1. Remotely access each member server of the SQL Cluster individually. From my experience, this is optional. You can access the cluster master directly and see if the disk appears in Disk Management. If it does, you can skip down to Step 5.
2. In Server Manager of each cluster member, right click Disk Management and rescan the disks. You should see an offline disk after the rescan. There is a possibility that the disk will already be present and no rescan will be needed. If there is no disk present, return to the Compellent interface and re-check the volume mappings.
3. Once the cluster members have rescanned their disks, remotely access the cluster master via the cluster’s virtual FQDN.
4. In Server Manager of the cluster master, goto Disk Management
5. Right click the new disk and choose Online
Once the disk is online, Windows will assign it the first drive letter available starting with D. It should appear as a healthy partition with all the data intact and ready to access.
III. Use FCM (Failover Cluster Management) to expose the data to the SQL cluster
1. Expand the cluster to reveal the Storage folder. Click the Storage folder. In the Action pane on the right side choose “Add a disk”. Choose the new disk. If there are no disks present, click the Refresh button.
2. Expand Services and Applications. Choose the one you want to add storage to. In the Action Pane on the right side, choose “Add storage”. Add the new disk
3. Add a dependency to the SQL cluster. Without this, the databases cannot be attached.
a. In the service summary, the SQL server will be listed in the Other Resources section. Click the SQL server you wish to add the dependency to and click properties.
b. In Properties, click the Dependencies tab. Click the field “Click here to add a dependency”. Click the Resource field which will reveal a drop down menu. From the menu, add the new storage added in the previous step.
c. Choose the storage and click Insert. Apply the setting and OK out of the menu.
The database should now be available to attach and use.
